Frequently Asked Questions

  • We offer Registered Clinical Counselling to individuals and couples/alternative relationship structures.

  • We offer counselling services in English and Mandarin.

  • Getting started in therapy can feel overwhelming and scary - we totally get it! However, the first step is super simple. You can start by either booking a consultation session (conducted over the phone or virtually) to see if this feels like a good fit for you. Or, you can jump right into booking a first session, complete the intake and consent form, and your counsellor will take care of the rest.

  • In a way, therapy is a highly individualized experience, with every counsellor offering their own unique strengths, trainings, personality, background, and perspectives. The most important thing is whether you feel that your therapist is a good fit for you!

However, a couple of things that makes us stand out are our ability to offer culturally-informed service due to our lived experience and personal backgrounds, our ability to offer counselling in languages other than English, and longer session times - 60 minutes instead of 50 minutes.

  • After a few years of practice, 50 minutes just feels a little short for us - since there’s usually a few minutes spent on greetings, checking in, and administrative tasks like booking our next session. So, we’ve decided to offer 60-minute sessions so that both counsellor and client can feel less rushed.

At the same time, it is important for us to start and end sessions on punctually. We are a small, single-office clinic, so time is needed to prepare our office and ourselves between clients. Also, for the sake of privacy and confidentiality, we want to make sure there is minimum overlap between clients, which means leaving plenty of time between when one client leaves and another arrives.

  • You can reach us anytime via our contact page or email. We aim to respond quickly—usually within one business day.

  • Individual counselling starts at $165 CAD for a 60-minute session, and Relationship Counselling starts at $195 CAD for a 60-minute session. Extended sessions (90-minutes) are available at a higher rate. The default payment method is through credit card after a session is complete (we will process the payment using the credit card you have on file), or you can choose to pay by E-transfer prior to the start of a session.

  • Currently, counselling services are not covered under provincial health care (MSP).

However, many insurance/health benefit providers include Registered Clinical Counselling under their coverage. After a session is complete, you will be provided an invoice with your counsellor’s name and license number (RCC Number), which are typically needed for the insurance claim.

We highly recommend that you check with your insurance provider first to ensure you are covered prior to your first session!

  • We understand that life happens. We have a 48 hour cancellation policy:

    • If a session is cancelled or rescheduled between 24-48 hours ahead of the session time, a cancellation fee of 50% of the session fee will be charged. For example, if you cancel or reschedule 40 hours ahead of your individual counselling session, you will be charged $82.5.

    • If a session is cancelled or rescheduled within 24 hours of the session time, you will be charged 100% of the session fee. For example, if you cancel 20 hours ahead of your individual counselling session, you will be charged $165.

However, we totally understand that life happens. The cancellation policy isn’t meant to be punitive - it is meant to be protective and respectful of the time that we reserved just for you. So, we offer every client one “freebie” - each client is allowed one late cancellation/rescheduling without charge. After that, the 48 hour policy will be firmly upheld.

  • In this case, no! They are the same and you may see counselling/therapy and counsellor/therapist used interchangeably.

Colloquially, therapist and therapy might be more popular terms. Within British Columbia, we are known as Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCS) and licensed through the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, hence counsellor and counselling may be more common terms in BC.

However, there is a difference between RCCs, Psychologists, and Psychiatrists. RCCs have a minimum Masters level of education, whereas Psychologists and Psychiatrist have Doctorate levels. Psychiatrists are covered under MSP, and RCCs and Psychologists are not. Some insurance providers may only cover services offered by Registered Psychologists instead of RCCs, so it is important to confirm that you are covered.
